Is The Wii Successful?

Sure this sounds crazy but hear me out before you answer. Sure in terms of sales and popularity it’s a sure fire hit but in terms of games and staying power does it cut the mustard?

About a year and a half ago I got my Wii on release and although it was hard to find I was pleased with my self and played it for about a week constantly. Now after that high, fast forward on to the present tense and my Wii is covered in dust. Granted I haven’t got a gigantic collection for it but I do play the top games and I can’t say I’m too impressed.

On the Nintendo First Party side of things you have some truly quality games. Titles like Zelda, Metroid, Super Paper Mario & last but not least Super Mario Galaxy are still great games but if you look out side of those few titles that Nintendo spread around the year, you’ll find nothing but shovel-wear and mini-game collections. Why is it that Nintendo, the same Nintendo that produced the SNES that had some of the best third party support, now can’t get any decent third party games on the Wii. It was the same problem that plagued the Gamecube. Thats not to say that all third party titles are terrible because games like Geometry Wars, No More Heroes & Resident Evil are all great games but why is it that the cream of the crop come from in-house Nintendo produced software titles.

Third party titles seem to just use the motion sensing just because its there. It seems that a lot of games would work the same on a traditional console and thats not what I was expecting. To be honest everyone wanted unique games for the Wii and not just a Playstation 2 title with waggle controls. Nintendo seem to be the only producers who can make games that use the functionality well. It could be sloppiness or inexperience, on the third party side of things that causes this though.

Thats not to say that I don’t like the Wii. I’m firm supporter of it, I’d just like to be able to play it a lot more. Nintendo did say that traditional gamers wouldn’t get hurt while they go off trying to get a new demographic but it seems while they gallivanting with their new consumers they forgot about the ones who helped get them to the ball.

Wait, I’ll come back a few pegs. I love Nintendo and to be honest they have done nothing wrong. They have tried something different and succeeded at every possible point but I’d just wish they would cater to the hardcore fan base, that they have a little bit more. I suppose it doesn’t help that I don’t really like Super Smash Brothers but I’m sure I’ll pick up Mario Kart and play it for about a month and then store more dust until the next title comes out.

What do you guys think? Are you happy with the games on the Wii, obviously there can always be more but with what you have are you happy with your purchase. If you don’t have a Wii is this the main reason that you haven’t picked one up or is it something else? Let us know by clicking the link below.

P.S. - Sorry for all the Nintendo hate, it will stop next week I promise. Love you Nintendo x x x x.
