End of Year Exclusives: Sony Vs Microsoft

Last year you’ll have no arguments that Microsoft’s better games line up prevailed over Sony’s. You could forgiven Sony and its developers for not having enough time to get used to the new hardware or it could have been that Microsoft just crammed all their five star quality titles into a few months. Whatever the reason, it leaves 2008 to be more important. With now both Sony and Microsoft preparing great looking line ups for the end of the year. We take a look to find out who’s line up looks better on paper.
Sony’s heavy hitters are Killzone 2, Resistance 2 & Little Big Planet and to be honest that sounds like enough to fight off anything Microsoft have as Sony are releasing what should be 3 fantastic games. Although Microsoft will be serving up some Gears of War 2, Fable 2 & Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise to combat Sony’s onslaught. At the recent industry press events we got a truck load of information about what both company’s will be offering come Christmas time.
Microsoft
Microsoft don’t exactly have the massive line up they’ve had in previous years but come with a few hotly anticipated games. Gears of War 2 is already looking like a suitable follow up to, arguably 2006’s Game of the Year. While titles like Viva Pinata & Banjo Kazooie are aimed at a younger demographic they do have their niche fans, admittedly Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise does look as fun as the original.
Fable 2 still looks interesting but it has for the last few years although if Molyneux can deliver on the promise then we will have something very special indeed. It would be great for Microsoft if this is the game that delivers because to be honest, they need it. Microsoft has a few quality tiles but its nothing compared to years past.
Sony
On the other side of the fence, Sony and you can’t argue with Killzone 2, Resistance 2 & Little Big Planet. Killzone 2 might not be able to live up to the hype it setup in the trailer but if it gets even half way there you’ve still got a great game. Meanwhile Resistance 2 comes packing with its large scale multiplayer and epic multiplayer options. For those you don’t like FPS’ then Little Big Planet will offer something for everyone. From its creative level building to it’s physics based platform elements, Little Big Planet can’t fail to deliver.
Maybe, these three titles aren’t enough on their own but together you have a system selling line up and thats without mentioning Motorstorm 2, SOCOM Confrontation or ‘Buzz!’.
Conclusion
With E3 rapidly approaching, you would expect a few more game announcements and we are yet to hear about titles like Halo Wars or APB. Talking of game announcements Microsoft need some for their side as they have the foundations but lack the quantity of heavy hitters that Sony are releasing this year. You have to give it to Sony this year for pulling out all the stops, this is starting to seem like the year of the Playstation 3 with each and every press release.
Most importantly both consoles are starting to offer different things, instead of being all so similar. Thus making it harder for the consumer to make a purchase, maybe a one-console future wouldn’t be a bad thing?

you seem to be the only person on the interweb that does’nt know that Killzone 2 has been confirmed for a February 2009 release.
Although not in the Christmas release, don’t forget Haze, MGS4, Siren:Blood Curse to name 3 more PS3 exclusives that’ll be out this summer. The year of teh PS3 definately!!!

This is retarded, this is the first year sony has released anything even close to games like Halo 3 and Gears of war, and concidering games like Gears Of War 2 and Banjo Kazooie nuts and bolts (which will slaughter any platformer Sony has in it’s arsonal), Sony needs two more years like this to catch Microsoft.

lol and this is including only a few games from the PS3 lineup. I guess you picked three from each console to make it seem more even, but there really isn’tmuch more coming out for the 360. I mean come on, you have to include a kid’s title??? On the other hand, the ps3 is full of em, white knight story, wardevil, haze, METAL GEAR SOLID 4 (how could you not include that one in there?), whatever Naughty Dog is working on, Tears of Blood, Socom confrontation, motorstorm2, afrika, the agency, eight days, heavy rain, home, inFAMOUS, Tekken 6. There’s no question sony beats out MS this year.

It’s quite fair not to mention MGS 4 in the “End of the year exclusives”, when it’s releasing in june. The same for Haze.
Afrika hasn’t been heard from in almost a year, so why include it?
Why not include a kid’s title? I assume that it’s Viva Piñata you’re referring to. Seeing as the original is one the most loved games on the 360, why not include it?
And when you mention Afrika, I can’t see why the author shouldn’t mention Viva Piñata. Although I personally look forward to Afrika, I would like to see some more material from it soon.. Maybe even a hint to how it is played!
I fear that Killzone 2 will get average reviews.

You left out a bunch of games coming out this year for the PS3. Microsoft can’t even compare to the line-up PS3 has for 2008. My only reason to keep the 360 is because of Gears of War 2. Otherwise, it would have been on Ebay.

how can u possibly forget mgs4??? and Killzone has already been delayed. this year will be ps3’s, hands down, same can probably be said for 2009 as well. delaying killzone2 was a smart move by Sony. 08 has more than enough exclusives, 2 consecutive successful years for the ps3 will allow it to surpass the 360.

Still if we count console exclusive 360 exceeds over ther I would say that the line up of 360 is great and is like 2007. If they maintian this kind of lineup it will definietly be hard for Sony to beat them but the hardware issues of 360 are painful.
Anyways I am with 360 due to games and the thing I dont like abt most PS3 games are that they are hard and frustrating at times and I am not the kind of guy to say its frustrating so its better. But indeed Little Big Planet, Resisatance 2 and MGS4 are charm but Motorstorm 2 I dont get it.

Honestly that list for both sides (XBOX 360 and PS3) are rather small. In fact Metal gear Solid 4, nor Too Human are even on there… Seriously this is a very small list. PS3’s exclusive line-up looks more robust than what Microsoft has right now. (Seriously take a look at the content of every game for each platform. You’ll see that Sony’s side of things has quite a bit of things over on Microsoft.)

i just ordered my consol today, ps3, personaly tho i like all 3 consoles and i would say at this moment 360 does have more to offer, but i know this time next year things will be different, ps3 is by far the more superior machine and once developers start making the most of it there will be no arguement over which is the best as it will be blatently obvious

Just looking at the line-up to cover the entire year, at least that of what we know about currently, based on this gamers on either side are going to have an expensive year ahead, especially dual console owners such as myself.
The titles I am looking forward to, in order are: Metal Gear Solid 4, Gears of War 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Fable 2 and LittleBigPlanet. Those for me are games that I must play, no doubt I hae likely missed out on a few here, given the funds I’d also like to dip my toe into SOCOM Confrontation and HAZE too. I expect many of these titles will keep me busy just for their online multiplayer component the most, which may see memissing out on some other gems.

I was just checking how many ps2 were sold in the US since it was introduced, and there is around 48 millions ps2 in the US alone, the ps3 have almost 5 millions. I also looked into the original xbox sales numbers and it sold about 16 millions in the US, and the 360 sold almost 12 millions. so, it seems that given or taking, 3/4 of the people that had an original xbox upgraded for a 360 and around of 10% of the ps2 owners upgraded for a ps3. so, this lets me believe that people are waiting for better motive to jump on the ps3 boat. the 360 already released its flagship title out there (halo 3) and it didn’t even came close to the first 2, also, you have to remember that the halo franshise kept the original xbox afloat.
just to let you all know, i have all 3 consoles… and the wii sucks!!!!!!

MGS4 is for June, so I wont brag about that. Final Fantasy 13… DECEMBER 08. That will destroy the XBOX in December.
And who ever brought up Bioshock 2, and Mass Effect 2 is soooooooooo lost… Neither game is scheduled for an 08 release and will probably come by late 09… And Bioshock is setting it’s sight onto the PS3 for those who didnt already know….
By the way I own both an XBOX360 and a PS3, but I have to be realistic and give the credit to those who deserve it atleast for the time frame that we’re discussing here…

I think this year is going to be a good one for video games.
Sony is releasing its titles that are supposed to be extremely anticipated. (Personally i have never played a MGS game, Final Fantasy, Killzone, or Resistance.) But I hear they are good. Haze is one im interested in, still need to try the demo.
Microsoft doesnt have much compared to last year. Gears 2 is sure to be big, hopefully multiplayer will be way better. Fable 2 is looking to be an amazing game. Simply ignore anything Molyneux says and just look forward to the game itself. Viva Pinata 2 should be fun, the first is fun in little hour long sessions. There are multiple other games coming out too, simply none that havent gotten to much light.
The Wii will probably still sell the most consoles, but its not going to have a hard-hitting lineup like either Sony or Microsoft.
Its a good year to have gamefly.

GTAIV exclusive DLC can go get its tongue frozen to a pipe for all I and most casual gamers care and I haven’t heard anything about exclusive content for other games. But that might be because they didn’t spend 50M for it

Developers are saying that the 360 is at it’s limit and holding back PS3 versions of games such as Ghostbusters, among others
Although I will say that I would buy a 360 for NG2, Crackdown 2 if it really is in development, Too Human, Gears 2 and Fable 2 along with Mass Effect 2 if it does come out this year but that seems a bit early for such a big game. But really, all caps makes you seem highly noobish and I just personally prefer the PS3 line-up anyway.

Just wanted to say I have both Xbox 360 and PS3. IMO, PS3 has a way better line up up til the end of the year. Even minus MGS 4, I’m way more excited for the PS3 line up. They forgot SOCOM, which has never disappointed in the past, KZ2 and Resistance 2 is top on my list. Others not getting any spotlight due to these awesome games are like GT5, The Agency and Infamous. As for the Xbox, Fable was a disappointment and was massively over-hyped as well as Halo 3, so maybe the sequel will be a little better but not enough to be on this list next to Gears of War 2 and Resistance 2. Too Human looks to be interesting. Gears of War was freaking awesome and I am definitely looking forward to the sequel, but that is pretty much it for XBOX. This could be the year for the PS3.

Sony will own Microcrap. Resistance 2, Killsone 2, Haze, Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, The Agency. Rivaled by what from Microshit?? Ninja Gaiden 2??? Banjo??? Halo Wars???? Gears 2 will be decent if they lose the shitty one liners and Alan Wake is the only other interesting title. Let’s face it, first person shooters make the systems and Sony’s the way to go there. The creativity and masterful artistic touch of Little Big Planet will be UNDENIABLE. Bioshock is the only reason to buy a 360 and it came out in 07 and it may be ported to PS3 and if that happens it’s over.

Wow, that is a few. At least two are unconfirmed, so yeah im terrified. Oh and one of those two “GTA V” is also 360. They fucked up Gran Turismo anyway, graphics are good, but thats about it.
