Best Sports Game
It seems that the one constant within games is that we will see a new batch of sports games every year and 99% percent of the time it will be hard to spot any major difference between last years rendition. Luckily recently EA have started to innovate a lot more with their core franchises. Analog controls, better online and a generally better game seem to be the most important and incremental changes we see and they really add up to a better game.

We are talking about games like Tiger Woods Pro Tour 09 and FIFA 09. A few years back you could see two repetitive and stale games but now you have a more engaging experience. Tiger Woods now includes a great analog stick control scheme along with brilliant online that flows a lot better. Meanwhile FIFA 09 has finally surpassed the once dominant Pro Evolution Soccer with the same brand of smooth online and innovative match ups. The fact that you can jump onto a server with 19 other players to play a 10 vs 10 game of football without too many hitches along the way is a great achievement in itself.
Although EA have done a great job they don’t have the sudo-sport of wrestling wrapped up. WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2009 and TNA Impact both did great jobs of presenting the hard hitting sport within a game. TNA Impact’s short roster and repetitive nature could be forgiven simply for being an alternative to the SvR series.
Despite these EA’s most innovative sports game was…

NHL 09
It’s hard to pinpoint a single thing that made it great. Maybe it was the addictive statistics builder that was the Be A Pro mode. It might have been the improved defensive controls that made previous innovations look half finished. Or maybe it was the more accessible nature of the game that made it appear to even non-fans of the sport. Either way it’s all of these reasons and more that make NHL 09 our Sports Game of the Year.
