Best Shooter
This year has given us a lot of shooters and although we haven’t seen a massive leap that, for example Bioshock gave us last year but we’ve seen some of most competent and brilliantly well tuned games the genre has ever seen. It was Treyarch’s turn with the ball this year and although they might not have topped last year’s Modern Warfare, Call of Duty World At War was definitely at the same high level. The truth is that although the game was solid enough it was just another shooter in World War 2. It’s a shame that it got that label early on in development which meant that World At War was being gimped out of the gate.

Early on in the year we were treated to Battlefield Bad Company and Rainbow Six Vegas 2. Both very different and distinct concepts within the same genre but both uniquely doing a fantastic job at their respective goals. Bad Company was mainly focused on destruction within a great engine with a fairly interesting and humorous narrative to tie it all together. Meanwhile Vegas 2 did a brilliant job of improving on the ground work the original set. With it’s hugely supported and hardcore online community and it’s innovative features across numerous modes, Vegas 2 did a great job of wrapping up Rainbow Six’s adventures in Las Vegas.
Finally FarCry 2 really came out of nowhere to become one of the best games of the year. Sure we all knew about what it set out to do but with the original FarCry not delivering, many gamers could be forgiven for casting doubt upon what turned out to be a brilliant all around experience. It wasn’t flawless by any sense of the imagination but an engaging story combined with an interesting environment soon made any flaws a distant memory.
Despite all these the winner is…

Gears of War 2
At first Gears of War 2 appeared to be a complete rehash of the original but it doesn’t take long for you to be impressed by the massive amounts of tweaks and additions that Epic have made along the way. It might have appeared a bit rushed towards the end but as an overall game it was solid mainly due to the constantly changing and brilliant looking environment, the improvement on the narrative and just the general improvement to the game overall.
