Every game has a Unicorn, a mythical item, or object that the players strive for. To have it brings a smile to the players face and to the envy of all others. To earn the Unicorn is a mission in itself, a game within the game and most importantly a truly mind boggling gruelling task which means only those most determined players ever see it through.

After over a two month grind in my current MMO-RPG of choice, Everquest. I received my Unicorn… in-fact my Unicorn was a Unicorn, the fabled mythical mount with bonus increases to harvesting and of course speed. The grind was simple, you must button click grind, and spend a fortune on supplies to craft your way to the required faction.

I have to admit, I cheated to begin with. I called upon the help friends and we abused guild flag teleportation to get around the locations that my character was far to under the level requirement to get through. Upon doing the start up quests we then began the solo missions, the group instance missions and the typical grinding missions, the only catch was the group ones were once a day and for a guild-less one like myself the group part of it makes it a bit of a problem. The solo ones were easy, once a week though did put strain, however I did it… YES! I did it. I earned my Unicorn.

But what makes up a Unicorn?

I guess the idea of a Unicorn goes back to basic Dungeons and Dragons tabletop play. As you quest you gain better loot and treasure, a Unicorn is not needed to finish a game, it is only needed to enhance the players experience, most importantly a Unicorn is more important than levelling, because a symbol of status, a trophy that echoes to all just how great you are. Every MMOer knows, there’s nothing more valuable than bragging rights.

There are five things to me that make up a Unicorn

1. It is difficult
2. It takes a while
3. Many other players give up or use the excuse that its stupid
4. It gives you an advantage over other players in some way (Mine was harvesting time)
5. It makes you want to brag about it to all others

The only exception about all of those above, would probably have to be something that has no benefit to the player but complete bragging rights and status, in Everquest this comes in the form of dragon head trophies for your Guildhall, allowing you to brag about how awesome your guild is.

With that in mind this is probably the worst written article I have ever coined, I think because I am not trying to talk about anything in particular, I am just taking every possible moment and chance to brag about how I have achieved my goal, I know a lot of you were waiting for me to post this, you had evilly put up with me picture sending, and bragging all week. But you know, this post is more of a trophy in its own right but not just a trophy for me, but chance to brag about your own Unicorn- Feel free to comment below!

Oooh, World of Warcraft is absolutely packed with Unicorns! For example, there’s the Time-lost Protodrake, a VERY nice flying mount… but to get it, you have to kill it… and it only appears for an hour *once a week at a random time*.

So I probably won’t bother getting that ;) The only Unicorns I myself have are some hard-to-get achievements and a few bits and pieces of nice gear :)
