Remember when they said Rock Band would be a platform and not an annual franchise. Well it seems they lied.

MTV’s Scott Guthrie commented in an interview with MVC that “The Harmonix development team are working on what is effectively the new game, or Rock Band 3″.

So there you have it, they will be releasing these things every year. Kind of disappointing but DLC sales are down so they need to make money some how. This admission of making Rock Band a franchise is probably down to the fading interesting in these types of game.

Is anyone really excited about plastic instruments any more?

I’m excited for Rock Band 3. I dunno why, but they just seem to make it a better experience than Guitar Hero. I gave up buying DLC on GH coz it couldn’t be forward transferrable (it is from now on tho I heard).

I just hope with RB 3, that you can do a export all songs key thing with RB 2, like you could with RB 1. That’ll bug me if they can’t allow RB 1 & 2 songs in this game.

I agree with their being too many games though. All of these are out in 2009:
    GH 5
    GH Metallica
    GH Van Halen
    GH Smash Hits
    Band Hero
    The Beatles: Rock Band
    LEGO Rock Band

I think GH/RB are becoming the new Singstar, with lots of releases all not meaning as much as they used to.

Yeah I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. Rock Band seems more accessible while Guitar Hero is that old name you recognise but plastered over a plethora of release.

With the amount it’s becoming hard to really care for what are incredibly similar experiences.

I think the only way I’d really care is if each song had it’s band in the game. Like say you play a Papa Roach song, on stage is a digital version of Papa Roach. It’d take too much time for them to do though.

Sooner rather than later they’re going to have to just charge £20 for each new GH/RB release, as it’s too expensive to pay £40 each time for the same experience.

I see with GH 5 if you pre-order it on some sites you get GH World Tour free. So I guess they might be worried about sales of GH 5 so need to offer an incentive.
