The original Godfather game wasn’t really anything special. Alright maybe that’s not giving the game enough credit as it deserved but as a whole the game lacked content. Levels were repetitive and other activities were limited although despite saying this I should say that I enjoyed it. Maybe it was the IP that sold it or maybe that it was just a solid alternative to GTA or Mafia that came out during a gap between.

Although it’s been nearly three years since the original, EA haven’t given up on this franchise yet and obviously this one follows the story of The Godfather Part II. You play as Dominic a ruthless coldblooded killer who will stop at nothing as long as it helps the Corleone family in their fight against three other major crime syndicates. Your goal is to aspire to be the biggest crime family in America and the fact that you have to take out these other crime groups is just part of the job.

You might have noticed the important use of the word America rather than a New York or New Jersey. Well that’s because this time the story plays out over the three major cities of Havana, Miami and of course New York it’s self. It’s unknown how this will work but we do know that the games protagonist initially starts off in Miami and then gets moved to New York after the head in the big apple (who coincidentally was the protagonist of the first game) gets whacked.

The core of the game will essentially be the same but with loads of minor improvements scattered around. First off you can command a few guys while you work as a squad to take over a local business or operation. Bomb experts for example can be used to aid you on a mission if explosives are required. You can then strategically coordinate your attack which should prove to add a bit more depth to the missions.

Another change is called Don’s View. This allows you to oversee everything in the city so you can see where to expand or where to protect. You can then order a couple of thugs to take over business in said areas or you can do it yourself. Or as previously mentioned you could do both.

The original game was great but it got too samey and so far we haven’t seen anything that will stop that from happening again. But then on the other hand we haven’t seen anything that could prove it to be the case again. We’ll never really know until when the game drops next month but what we do know is that The Godfather 2 will be a bigger and more strategic game with more of a thorough and methodical approach behind it. Whether that will pay off, only time will tell.
