Best Puzzle

We normally get tons and tons of horrible cash in puzzle games across the board. Be it horrible sudoku cash-ins or generic block beaters you rarely find a truly interesting puzzle game yet this year we found at least five great standout titles. Loco Roco 2 is puzzley enough to be considered along with fellow PSP title Echochrome. Although sometimes it never followed it’s own rules when it was good it was mind bendingly complex. Meanwhile props go out to World of Goo and Ninjatown.

Despite these the winner is…

Boom Blox

Think of all the epic movies Steven Spielberg has put out and then think of the game he would release. In your mind it’s nothing like Boom Blox yet the physics based puzzle game became one of the biggest games for the wii this year.

Best Downloadable Game

What a brilliant year it has been for the downloadable marketplace. The cheap nature of the platforms mean you’ll spend large amounts of cash with out even noticing it on games that you might not play for too long. Yet this year downloadable games have started to mature and often beat their physical retail counterparts. Starting off with the terrific indie darling that was Braid. Brilliant puzzles combined with a terrific vision and art style made this one hard to miss.

Remakes were par of the course this year with Sega’s musical classic that was Rez finally reach it’s true potential. Every line and shape looked as smooth as it was original intended to be in Rez HD. Meanwhile Sony released one of the best value for money titles of the year in Wipeout HD. Although not a full remake it did include tracks from previous versions but in glorious 1080p HD visuals.

Early in 2008 we saw the release of a great tower defense game called PixelJunk Monsters that made tower defense relevant and interesting still years after it’s initial release. The game developed a great cult following that saw it get an add-on pack and helped the PixelJunk franchise build upon 2007’s flawed genius in PixelJunk Racers. They then tweaked this simple gameplay mixed with innovative ideas in….

Pixeljunk Eden

PixelJunk Eden. Not much really has to be said about this game. The brilliant and soothing soundtrack, the sharp visual style and almost childlike platforming proved to be a killer combination for us this year and that’s why it’s our downloadable game of the year.
