Best Rhythm Game

Again we are going to take a trip down memory lane and think back to the days before Guitar Hero. It’s obvious to anyone that through Guitar Hero the Rhythm genre got reborn. The truth is that this genre was vastly underestimated and unappreciated among the industry. Games like Frequency didn’t get the attention they deserved but the mainstream appeal that came along with Guitar Hero has brought the genre to new heights. That’s why this year’s nominees are all great games and some of them don’t involve plastic instruments.

Guitar Hero made the big switch to a full band set up so Rock Band tried to counter this move with what was a brilliant improvement on the original. Excellent new features helped Rock Band 2 cement it’s place as king of the…. plastic instrument games. Despite that Guitar Hero World Tour still hit hard with a complex music creation tool and frankly better instruments.

It’s probably for the best that we mention Guitar Hero Aerosmith. Personally I’m not a fan of Aerosmith but they delivered on every Aerosmith fans dream. Moving into slightly different territory was a Wii re-release of Samba de Amigo that despite still suffering from slight control issues was a surprise hit on the Wii and didn’t really get the attention it deserved.

Still the game that beat the rest was…

Audiosurf

In what is probably the surprise hit on the PC of the year, it’s Audiosurf. With games like LBP showing you how gaming without limits should work it was great to see a game like Audiosurf get it’s release to some major coverage. You ride along a track picking up blocks (or avoiding them depending on what mode your in) along to the beat of your own music. This fate of the game lived and died at how well it could generate a level and luckily the algorithm work, worked a treat. The game has such a lasting effect after playing that when you hear an interesting tune you want to see how it will do in Audiosurf.
