Best Platformer Game

The last few years we haven’t really seen any mark out worthy Platformer games. The genre was heading towards the skids due to a lack of innovation from any company not called Nintendo. Luckily though 2008 changed that with 5 brilliant platformers and none of them being made by the big N

LocoRoco 2 although it could be considered a puzzle game has enough platforming elements to keep it from these awards. It built upon the brilliant ground work laid down in the original with a plethora of new levels, styles and most importantly music. Meanwhile Mirror’s Edge took a completely different approach on platforming by simply changing to a first person perspective. That combined with a clean graphical output and a slick freerunning control scheme made this a standout title if only from a concept perspective.

Platforming games had really started to make their mark through downloadable marketplaces in 2007 and this year only the cream of the crop stood out against a crowded market. Pixeljunk Eden was anything but a traditional platformer with it’s great swing mechanics and constantly changing goal orientation. Eden’s soundtrack and visuals also helped cement the game as one of the best of the year and is still a brilliant game to chill with. Meanwhile again another puzzle-esque game was Braid. The truth is that although it looks like a platformer, plays like a platformer and echos and references so many moments from famous platformers in the past, Braid is anything but. But the way it made you think about puzzles along with a brilliant art style and narrative meant that Braid is easily one of the best downloadable games of the year.

Although despite these there was only really one game that could have won this….

LittleBigPlanet

…and of course it’s LittleBigPlanet and were do you start. It brought back the original form of side scrolling platforming and made it fresh and original again. Easy to pick up and play controls helped the game become more accessible to those outside of the gaming scene while the level creator and massive amounts of content on offer still made it appeal to the hardcore. Proving that everyone is a winner with LittleBigPlanet
