Before we wrap it up with the game of the year we will go over our honorable mentions for standout achievement awards. These are the awards for things like best graphics and sound.

Best Soundtrack

First off we’ve had some brilliant music in games this year. GTA always manages to have brilliant soundtracks and the forth game didn’t disappoint with some excellent stations all around. LittleBigPlanet had a great OST with an eccentric collection of music from all corners of the globe. Mirror’s Edge also hit it out the park with some original music that would seem out of place in traditional first person games. Although our favorite soundtrack of 2008 was PixelJunk Eden’s tripped out minimalist electro from the artist known as Baiyon.

Best Graphics

Real life Graphics are starting to become the norm as now games producers can pull off realistic looking graphics with ease and that’s why we are running down the best graphical game and the best artistic looking game. Shout outs to Fable 2, LBP, Pure and Gears of War 2 for all having stunning graphics but the game that shocked us the most was the irreplaceable GRID. Brilliant lighting effects combined with a great sense of speed made this our favorite looking piece of eye candy this year.

Best Artistic Style

Meanwhile graphics can now stand out on artistic merit alone and loads did. The Last Guy was nearly flawless from a graphical point of view with it’s high definition satellite shots of famous locations. PJ Eden also had excellent art direction but sometimes those colour schemes didn’t go easy on the eye but that didn’t stop Eden from being one of the best looking downloadable games this year. Echochrome shone out with it’s MC Esher style of puzzle along with a full reworking of the vector graphics seen in Rez HD. Our best looking game on artistic merit alone goes to Wipeout HD. Brilliant track design with an interesting look into the world of this future sport was only backed up by crisp and sharp 1080p graphics.
