A few months ago Kaz Hirai announced that the service, Life With Playstation will be hitting the Network within a few months. But what exactly is Life With Playstation? We take a quick look at what the service entails
The main window will be a 3D globe that will contain hot spots for news, weather and content. Think something like the Wii News & Weather channels that also featured 3d globes. Again like Nintendo’s similar service you can zoom in and select a hot spot or headline to view the full article. From what we have seen the headline will open up a web site that contains an article unlike the Wii’s News channel that uses RSS feeds to bring up articles from Nintendo’s content partners.
The Weather will be a bit more dynamic than the news though as the globe will be covered in the real cloud patterns taken from real weather satellites. User’s will also be able to set their own background music. Meanwhile The visuals will be similar to the folding@home service already on the Playstation Network. There are plans for the processing power you aren’t using while using the Life With Playstation app to go towards Folding@Home.
Sony have insured us that despite the appilcation launching with news and weather only, Life With Playstation can be easily expanded. Apparently there are plans for user generated content like photo’s and videos. This content will then be searchable by location and time by using the global map. Although we don’t know when these features will go live or the details of them but I’d expect the video’s to take full use of the new link Sony have with YouTube.
There are also plans for LWP to take use of Premium content and in-game advertising. So it definitely looks like Sony are going to launch the service with a small amount of features but by the sounds of it they can and will expand the service every now and then. Life With Playstation is expected to launch sometime this month.
