Pardon me for being a little behind the curve here but I recently went back and played some Guitar Hero 2. Now for anyone who hasn’t played Guitar Hero 3, you won’t know how ridiculous the game has become. The songs are a lot harder and the boss battles become near impossible at later stages.
So under the assumption that Guitar Hero 3 is a lot harder than the 2nd, I went back to see if I could clear a few songs I was stuck on previously. The song is question is “Crazy On You” by Heart and it beats me every time on Expert. Let it be said I know I’m not the best at Guitar Hero, its a difficult game, but I get along quite well on the lower level Expert songs.
Before I jumped straight into “Crazy On You” I tried out a few old classics that I missed while off gallivanting with Guitar Hero 3 and a few improved rankings helped my theory that GH3 was a lot harder. After finally building up the courage I tried to beat ‘Heart’.
To cut a short story even shorter, it beat me at the same point it did last time. I know for a fact that the note charts in the 3rd are harder, so surely Guitar Hero 2 should be a cake walk. Maybe I haven’t improved that much but after going back to the 3rd rendition, I noticed all the smaller engine changes. The Hammer ons and lay offs are a lot easier to hit in the 3rd. Meanwhile in the 2nd its still really strict with how you hit these notes.
Really it could just come down to the lack of skill I posses. Or it could be that Guitar Hero 3 isn’t really that much harder than its older brother (except the boss battles) and the engine changes make it more lenient to hit notes, thus making GH2 a hard game to go back to. It will be interesting to see what they do to either the 4th or the Aerosmith version, will it be easier due to complaints like these?
Has anyone else had this problem while going back to Guitar Hero 2?

No, dude. GH3 is a bit on the ridiculous side with the difficulty. GH2 was tough too but GH3 is so hard at times that it’s almost unplayable. At least with GH2, you have fun even when you’re losing.

I see it the opposite way- the more-forgiving note-detection in GH3 leaves me with less of a feeling of accomplishment. Riffs that normally required several attempts in GH2, are now being aced the first time through in GH3. When the demo came out, I quickly caught on to Tenacious D’s “The Metal,” and I sat there in disbelief as it let me get away with sloppy timing.
So I’m no fan at all of GH anymore. Neversoft screwed it all up.

See, I can go back and beat every song in expert in GH II. I go to three and the game kicks my ass. I even mastered hammer ons in 2, but in three, having a gajillion notes over lap each other then go into a wild frenzy of pink notes, I sit there wondering, “where the hell is the pink button…”
The game just exploded into unwanted territory, sucking all the fun out of it. I sometimes go back and play “Don’t Hold Back” by The Sleeping, or mayb some “(F)lannigans Ball” by the Dropkick Murphys, but in general I try to avoid GHIII. I might rent Aerosmith…
