I recently got to give the new Soul Calibur 4 a whirl at the recent Play.com Event. If you have ever played a Soul Calibur game you’ll know what to really expect and in the forth rendition the levels are looking a bit familiar and ts the usual suspects as far as the characters go. But will the latest addition to the franchise be on the same see-saw of quality? and can it go toe to toe with the rest of the fighters currently out there?
Being the first installment for the current generation of consoles, you may be forgiven for thinking that this is going to be a new landmark for fighters of the era. Unfortunately this new addition to the Soul Calibur franchise doesn’t really add anything to make you go ‘wow’. Sure they have flashy graphics and new characters it didn’t really seem like the next step up, don’t get me wrong it’s still a great game but it seems like you’re better off (at least financially) playing Soul Calibur 2.
Although we couldn’t play the game on story mode, this is never usually a strong point in a fighter, I have a feeling that Multi-player will be when this game will show its class. The build we played had one problem with it, when you K.O’ed someone they got back up and could cheap shot you before the K.O. screen appeared. It may have been a small bug but normally, people who can throw punches while standing, doesn’t count as knocked out.
So for the big question ‘Is it worth picking up’. Well yes and no, its good for what it is but the main problem is that Soul Calibur 4 doesn’t really bring anything new to the table never the less it is still a solid game that can get people playing for hours on end with its quality split screen and online multi-player modes. That and the fact that it’s still better than a lot of other fighters currently out there.
Saying all this, I still will have to get my hands on the final version to see what else they have added.
